Local Gifts For Christmas!

This year I decided to give all local products for Christmas gifts. It’s been really fun to shop around and put the baskets together.
I found some really cute wine totes on clearance at The Christmas Tree Shop that I stocked up on months ago. Now that Christmas time is here, I have been putting them to work! Not everyone I know loves wine though so I go creative and filled the totes with other products!
Here I have local Maple Syrup (sorry, don’t remember the farm it came from), Gormly’s pancake mix, Farm Girl hot cocoa mix, Brown Family Farm maple candy. I found these all at the grocery store. Make sure you check there for local products too!

The wine totes I found came with potholders, place mats, and cloth napkins that all matched. How cute! So I also stuffed the pot holders with gifts and tied them to the totes.

I also went the traditional route of just filling up a basket! This one holds my favorite Green Mountain Coffee, maple candy, locally made jellies and some Vermont mugs!

Of course, the wine totes came in handy for my wine loving friends! I filled this basket with all of the above, plus Amy’s Granola, Ben & Jerry’s lip balm, Switchback Ale and a local bottle of wine (I found several different brands of local wine, so I won’t list them).

Here is what I am giving the boys’ teachers…

Chalk Talk mugs from Green Mountain Coffee, Lake Champlain Chocolates, a sample hot cocoa and a gift card to Starbucks. I know, total non-local gift card. I ran out of time!

Oh! And I can’t forget, one of my favorites! Cabot Cheese! I just forgot the cheeses in the fridge when taking pictures of my baskets. 🙂

So those are my ideas for the gift of local products. Of course, these are all things Vermont is known for, look around and find some local products for your friends and family! Everyone will love it!

*None of this is sponsored! Just sharing my favorites!

Raspberry Champagne Punch

There’s nothing more festive than punch at a party! Here is my go-to celebratory punch for the Holidays!

Raspberry Champagne Punch

Ingredients:

Equal parts chilled fruit punch (the real kind, no hi-c!), champagne (I like a good Spumante) and ginger ale

Raspberry sherbet

Raspberries

Mix the drinks together in a glass pitcher or punch bowl. Scoop sherbet into pitcher or bowl. No need to measure, just fill it up! Dump in some raspberries. Sometimes I’ll also add lemon or orange wedges.

Serve cold and enjoy!

Why I Over-Share

Today I share about why I over-share over on Burlington Vermont Moms Blog. I like sharing. Sharing is caring. Mostly.

Why I Over-Share

Let me know where I can follow you and see all of your over-sharing!

A Silent, Lonely Journey

There are so many things I want to tell you but I can’t. Sometimes military life is a silent, painful road. There are secrets to be kept. Security is first, and keeping things to myself is not my biggest strength. But, alas, I must. So that is why I am being quiet. I have recipes to share and funny things to tell you about and many, many house pictures to update you on but it will all have to wait. We are counting down to a deployment. It is taking up most of my time and my brain space. I am still fulfilling my responsibilities that I have for writing for other blogs like Goodwill and BVTMomsBlog. But otherwise it will be quiet around here until after the holidays.

We appreciate your prayers while our family goes through this difficult, but rewarding journey.

OK, one funny conversation that happened between the boys before I go…

Charlie: If you put the dog in the oven, he would be a hot dog!

Chase: No, actually, he would be a dead dog.

Hope you are all having a wonderful Holiday Season!

Thanks4Giving From Donate Life Vermont!

The holidays are almost here, making it the time of year where we give thanks. One group in particular, Donate Life Vermont, is giving thanks to registered organ and tissue donors in Vermont with an exclusive Black Friday deal. It’s just their way of saying “Thanks for making the decision to give the gift of life!” Donate Life Vermont is calling this: Thanks4Giving!

This year, the Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop on Church Street in downtown Burlington has partnered with Donate Life Vermont to bring a special deal available only to registered organ and tissue donors in Vermont on Black Friday:

Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop – Buy one Small Scoop, get one FREE! (Click this link.)

But Thanks4Giving isn’t just about rewarding currently registered organ donors in Vermont; it is also about inspiring new ones during the giving season. Right now, the need for registered organ donors in Vermont has never been greater.

Every day, 18 patients on the transplant waiting list pass away due to lack of available organs for transplant. Everyone who chooses to donate life gives those on the waiting list hope to keep fighting on. Right now, over 116,000 people across the nation are waiting for a potentially lifesaving transplant, with just under 200 of those representing people from Vermont who are in need. This number keeps increasing because the supply of organ donors does not meet the demand. The people waiting for these transplants are made of up mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Your decision to donate can take less than 5 minutes, and just 1 donor can save up to 8 lives.

If you want to make the decision to give the gift of hope and claim this deal on Black Friday and spread hope this holiday season, you can register online at www.donatelifevt.org. Your gift will help you receive a gift in another form, that why it’s Thanks4Giving!

Recipe: Pumpkin Trifle

I shared a delicious fall recipe over at Burlington VT Moms Blog today!

Check it out: Pumpkin Trifle

I also took the same idea and made into a bigger batch for a crowd. I basically tripled the recipe and loaded it up in a baking dish. It would be beautiful in a trifle dish but, GASP-SHAME, I don’t own one.

Enjoy!

Remembering The Hungry In A Time of Feasting

There are so many who will go without a large feast this Holiday season. Today, I’m talking about what we did as a family to do our part to end world hunger. I mention an organization that deserves your support and some ideas for your family too!

Nasty Rusted Bathtub Before & After

When we first toured this house my biggest concern were the bathtubs. They were in such horrid shape! I wasn’t sure if they could be saved and I knew there was no money in our budget to replace them. New bathtubs are expensive, you guys! I had to decide if I was going to be ok with stained bathtubs for years to come. I decided the rest of the house was worth it. I would scrub until my hands fell off if I had to!

The upstairs bathroom was by far the worse. (Click here to see the downstairs bathroom!) The rust stains were so bad! It had sat like this for years so I really expected it to still be very stained when I was done. Here is what it looked like before:

The first thing I tried was CLR. I figured a rust remover would get off just about as much as was possible. Here is what it looked like after just using CLR:

I figured this was as good as it was going to get. I may have cried. But then my step-sister mentioned that she saw on Pinterest that using vinegar and Dawn dish soap worked on rust stains. So I gave it a try! That combination really did the trick. However, there was still a layer of rust that I just couldn’t get off. No matter how I tried! So I gave it one last go with a magic eraser. That was it! The magic rust busting potion! Check out what it looks like now!

Amazing, right?! I am so pleased that our bathtubs turned out so sparkling clean! So here is my advice for getting rust stains out of nasty bathtubs…

Skip the chemicals. I used almost an entire bottle of CLR. Not worth it! I should have just started with the natural stuff to begin with. Honestly, I thought it would only come out with the chemicals! I was dead wrong!

Wear gloves! Spray, scrub, soak, scrub. Repeat. I squirted the Dawn dish soap all over the tub. From what I’ve heard it HAS to be Dawn. I heard the generic brand didn’t work as well. Just straight from the bottle. Squirt! I then let it sit for a few hours. I came back and doused the tub with vinegar and scrubbed with a sponge. I then sprayed it again with vinegar and let that soak. Lastly, I scrubbed with the magic eraser. Depending on how bad your rust spots are, you may have to repeat a few times! I don’t think the order you do this in matters. Once I used all three items together, the rust just came right off. And this was 4 or 5 year old rust, people!

I’ve also used this beautiful combination to clean the stainless sink in the kitchen which was also terribly rusted. Worked like a charm! We had planned on replacing the sink, but didn’t have to after all! Who knew a $5 combination would save us thousands of dollars?!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Last week’s letter home from my second grader’s teacher mentioned that they were learning about respect. I asked Charlie about it. He said they watched a video on you tube. I  like to keep a connection between what’s happening at school with our lives at home, so we looked it up and watched it together as a family. I was pleasantly surprised! The video is so adorable and the words are a perfect way to talk to kids about what respect means!

As the days went on and the boys started arguing and fighting, I started singing the song out loud. Just randomly.

Charlie replies, “I regret telling you about that song.”

I thought I’d share it with you so you can watch it with your kids and make them regret it too! You’re welcome, kids!

Oh, and I apologize, the chorus is going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the week.
